Manchester United vs Liverpool

The fixture between Liverpool and Manchester United is one of the most significant sporting rivalries in football, sometimes referred to as the North West derby. The clubs are also the two most successful teams in England; between them they have won 118 honours: 60 for Manchester United and 58 for Liverpool.

The rivalry between the two clubs has become so intense that since the 1964 transfer of Phil Chrisnall from United to Liverpool, no player has been transferred directly between the two clubs. Though Paul Ince, Peter Beardsley and more recently Micheal Owen have played for both clubs but played for another team in between.

Manchester United go to Liverpool this weekend having not won there since December 2007, something the defending champions would like to change. The last ten fixtures at Anfield make better reading though with 5 United wins, 4 Liverpool and a solitary goalless draw. One draw in 10 fixtures shows that this is a result fixture, more often than not. United have the best Premier League record of any club against Liverpool, with 20 wins and 67 points. This is the 21st league meeting as managers between Kenny Dalglish and Sir Alex Ferguson (Ferguson leads by seven wins to five). Last season two players scored a hatrick each, Berbatov & Kuyt and only one is assured of a place in their respective teams match day squads ( Im not talking about the starting eleven). Lastly there have been four penalties awarded in the last five Premier League meetings between the two.

Players to look out for in the Liverpool camp is definately Luis  SuĂ¡rez, Steven Gerrard (whom I expect will play) and  Luis Enrique. United players to look out for is definately Wayne Rooney, Anderson and Nemanja Vidic (whom I expect will play).  It does not look as if Liverpool have missed the talismatic captain (I sometimes thought where would he fit in) but you can believe he will improve their squad. SuĂ¡rez vision and tenacious win at all cost attitude is one reason he already has 4 goals this term and if memory serves he ran United ragged back in March. Though Anderson has had a stellar start to the season his performances against the so called Top Five still needs to convince me and nothing like a derby to see if its so.Vidic will be a welcome return as United have only kept one clean sheet in their last five (in all competitions).

We know both teams are littered with youth, class and experience Nani, Adam, Chicharito, Downing, Reina, De Gea, even though my fantasy league team only boast Rooney & Enrique, these six I foresee shaping the way the match could go. If Anderson cant hold his own in the middle, like in the Basel match or Enrique can't look after Young it might be a long afternoon for one of these teams.

One thing is for sure though, all eyes will be on Anfield come 13:45 Saturday the 15th October 2011.

My prediction 2-1, no need to ask which team

What happens if Manchester United win the Europa League & finish in the top four?

Due to Champions League qualification clubs are now looking more favourably at the Europa League competition.  So Manchester United will naturally be gunning for glory as they take on Celta Vigo in their semi final.   If however, they win the tournament and finish the English Premier League in the top four, England will have just the four teams in Europe’s elite competition. What I find more interesting is if Manchester United win the Europa League and finish outside the top four! Should this scenario occur, England will have FIVE entrants to the Champions League, rather than four – with United joining the top four Premier League clubs.   There are a host of different scenarios as to who will be in Europe's second tier next season. For starters, the Premier League's fifth-placed club - should United not win the Europa League AND finish outside the top four - will go into the pot.   Then there's the EFL Cup - or League Cup - winners... however that tournament w

WHAT THE MANAGERS SAY Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp : "Apart from the table, it's a very important game. I know about the history, I like the special stories. The whole world will watch this game, it's a big honour to be part of it. "At the end, it's up to us to perform to our best. You cannot and should not ignore the special circumstance of a game like this. You have to be ready. "They have big quality and we have to respect this, as we do. But this is Anfield. We have to show this. We have had a few nice atmospheres but I'm open for the best atmosphere. We need everybody in a Liverpool shirt in this game." Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho on concerns over disrespectful chanting at the game: "In football we have some football tragedies, if you can say that, which is a big match that you lost, the mistake that some player did, this kind of thing, and you can make fun of it in a positive way. "But the human tragedy i

The Premier League changes its logo.

The most lucrative football league in the world, The English Premier League (EPL), yesterday unveiled its new official logo, which will be used from the 2016-17 season onwards. The division's lion icon has been the face of England's top flight since its launch in 1992 but has undergone a makeover to give it a fresh, modern look. It means, EPL is ending its 12-year association with Barclays bank and will from now on be known simply as ‘the Premier League’. The new logo – has a crowned lion’s head gazing to the right, accompanied by either the words ‘Premier League’ or ‘PL’ -- will replace the current logo of a lion with its left paw on a football. All 20 clubs in the top flight have also agreed a new centralised sponsorship strategy, meaning the league will no longer have a named sponsor. “From next season we will move away from title sponsorship and the competition will be known as the Premier League, a decision which provided the opportunity to consider how we wanted
