David Moyes took over at Manchester United just six months ago and you don't have to tell him that its been tough. Not just because he was faced with the most challenging start to a campaign for his new club since the inception of the English Premier League (EPL) in 1992.
In his first 11 EPL fixtures he played Liverpool, Chelsea, Manchester City and Arsenal all before mid November. I felt he did well to win 2 lose 1 and draw 1, I mean it could've been worse. He furthermore went on to break all the wrong records. Like teams coming to Old Trafford and winning for the first time in their history, like losing three consecutive matches and losing three in a row at Old Trafford (in a week) exiting the FA Cup in the thrid round to mention but a few.
It brings one to the conclusion that Sir Alex knew what he meant when he said "I would like to remind you this club stood by me in bad times, the players and the staff. Your job now is to stand by the new manager."
Some seem to feel he has to fill boots to big for him much like the unfortunate Wilf McGuinness, who only lasted 18 months after succeeding Matt Busby in 69 (Sir Matt Busby actually returned).
Don't get me wrong it will be beyond tough for Manchester United to win the EPL being so far behind not just due to our current erratic form but more so for the likes of City Chelsea and Arsenal to drop so many points to let us back in the title race. Moyes has said judge me after two years and I for one feel that's fair.
If the unthinkable and unfathomable happens and Champions League football will not grace the reds of Manchester they will still be able to draw from the top players pool. I totally agree with Robbie Savage when he says: "I still believe that, hypothetically, if Tottenham, Everton or Newcastle finished in a Champions League spot and United finished fifth then, if as a top player you had the choice to go to Spurs or United, you would still go to United." So maybe finishing outside the top 4 would be just the medicine the Glazer's need to pump some serious funds into building a United machine that will dominate again.
There is the school of thought that this Manchester United (the same United that won the EPL 11 points clear last term) are now realistically fighting for 4th place and just to let you know since 1992 they have only ever finished in the top 3 and to think this year would be any different would be stretch i.e. in my opinion.
Moyes said judge me after two years but the question for me is not about his first couple of years but whether or not he can turn six months into six years?
