For 44 fights in 17 years and not one draw makes Floyd "Money" Mayweather Jr understandably the odds on favourite on Saturday but he could possibly in Saul “Canelo” Alvarez face one of his toughest challenges of his career.
Canelo has a win record of 42-0-1 granted the level of opponent is not of the caliber of those Money has faced and defeated over the years. That said boxing can be funny where Canelo just needs to connect one of his powerful punches and he could dent the 36-year-old’s perfect record.
I look forward to see two facets of this fight.
One if Canelo can be patient against Money?
He might miss more than he connects but does he have the maturity to know that when does connect he has to make it count and not get frustrated by hitting air. In his favour there have been reports that Canelo is the only boxer who connects a higher percentage of his jabs than Money.
Two who will have the stamina to win late rounds?
A safe bet (if ever betting would be safe) is that this fight will go the distance. In Money's 44 & Canelo's 43 fights they have never been knocked out. In Money's favour is that five of his last six victories has gone the distance. Canelo on the other hand has only gone more than halfway through a bout in 5 of his last 10.
What the legends say :
Mike Tyson : "I've only seen Canelo fight twice -- against [Josesito] Lopez and [Austin] Trout. Trout gave him some trouble and he isn't as experienced and as technically skilled as Floyd is. Floyd stays in tip-top shape and is a very relaxed fighter. He is at his peak. It's going to be hard for anybody to beat Floyd now unless he doesn't train. Floyd has transcended the game so much that the best fighters out there now try to emulate his style. Floyd wins by a decision.''
Lennox Lewis : "Mayweather will win because of his speed and experience. He's been at this level before so that will also be an advantage. He's the best until proven otherwise. Canelo is talented, young, strong and dangerous ... makes it all the more exciting.''
I think it's to much of a risk to put my neck on the line and guess (as it will be just that a guess) a winner but what I can say is boxing needs this fight and the boxing truest have waited much to long for a true Pound for Pound bout. Enjoy!!!!!!
