One of English football's biggest rivalries, has somewhat whittled down in importance in recent seasons. The two giants in english football don't find themselves on the same end of the table competing for the title as they used to. So whom ever wins this Sunday has little to no effect on where this seasons champions will come from.
Don't get me wrong it is still the fixture I find myself looking forward to the most in the calender. The bragging rights for the winner has no comparison in world football. They are the two most guilty of being a one-man-team this season. Their Dutchman and Uruguayan have undoubtedly been the go to men this season for their respective managers and a loss of either for a lenghty period of time could be catastrophic. Highlighted by the fact that these two top the goal scoring charts (with only one goal separating them).
Sir Alex men are overwhelming favourites at home, they sit at the summit of the English Premier League eight places, 21 points better off than Rodgers chargers, they have scored 20 more goals, lost half as many fixtures and have drawn once compared to the seven by Liverpool.
That's all good and well but as history can destest favourites don't bring you 3 points and United will be weary of just that. Though goals might be the order of the day for the Manchester club, alarmingly they have conceded more goals than the Merseysiders. There is a school of thought that if I score more than you, I'd bag more points than you, but this season's 28 goals against does not make good reading just over halfway through the season, compared to the past four full league campaings in which United conceded 33, 37, 28 and 24.
With Arsenal taking on Manchester City in the later game, United have the opportunity to extend their lead at the top of the table to 10 points before the Sky Blues kick off at the Emirates Stadium.
Form shows Liverpool have won three of their past four games scoring 10 in the process and Suarez accounting for 5. United have won eight of their last nine with Robin Van Persie and Javier Hernandez combining to score or assist 13 of United's last 14 goals.
Defensive leader (and captain) Nemanja Vidic could return for United to bolster that defence. While without left-back Jose Enrique , arguably their next best player this season, the acquisition of forward Daniel Sturridge should provide some much-needed support to Suarez, who has scored 15 of Liverpool's 34 league goals this season.
The sale of Van Persie now seems ludicrous and if Sunday's North-West Derby comes down to Robin van Persie vs Luis Suarez its clear who'll come out tops ... or its clear who scores when he wants?
