My Captain My Captain John Smit

I found these three pictures of the South African Rugby Teams Captain John Smit and I'm sure every Springbok Supporter looks back at them as the really special if not magic moments in the career of the rugby legend. Yes he is a legend of this beautiful game and no as an All Black Supporter it doesn't pain me to say so, as I'm a lover of good rugby.

Who would forget the Boks winning the Web Ellis Trophy (for a second time) and John Smit lifting the trophy. Who would forget that one handed catch against Australia in the Tri Nations in 2010 and lastly and most importantly, his 100th test match in the "green and gold".

It's like one coach said (I won't mention any names to avoid sounding biased) "I'd rather retire a player one game too early than one game too late". . . . . "because you only as good as your last game". Would Smit in retrospect either have chosen to retire at 99 Tests and save himself the humiliation of missing the try saving tackle that cost his team a win in the final embers of his 100th test match and go out of the game right at the  top?  That speaks volumes for the coach as well hey, lets not get into PDV.

In my (and thousands of others) opinion Smit does not belong in the starting line up of the Bok team at this years Rugby World Cup whether or not he belongs in New Zealand is well . .  up to you, but if you have someone of the class of Bismarck du Plessis and in the form of his life (some say the best hooker in World Rugby) on the bench it shows something is seriously a miss. The South African's saying that Smit's inclusion in the team is because his leadership qualities would be missed on the field, I'm sorry he sometimes cant even keep up with play and this South African squad is littered with not just experience but with captains of their own franchises so that doesn't fly with me. Just one prime example is how the substitution of Smit for Bismarck against Wales in their opening game changed the game in the Boks favour even making more turnovers than Smit in his short stint on the field than the entire game Smit was on the field. How does it feel to be Smit knowing this? How does it feel to be Bismarck?

The Australians, the All Blacks (possible quarter and semi finalists) and the rest of the world would prefer Smit in a Bok starting line up to suit their interest but as a Springbok supporter, you must be honest Bismarck is the best number two (no pun intended) in South Africa and should start, the sooner South Africa realise that the better. Bismarck will start against Somoa this friday and South Africa would have you believe it is their way of giving him some game time, call me a cynic but I have this sneaky feeling its an attempt to save Smit from the hard Samoans .

Sadly it does look like John Smit will be retired "a game too late" and if they persist with him they make it even harder on themselves to retrain that precious gold trophy.

The Premier League changes its logo.

The most lucrative football league in the world, The English Premier League (EPL), yesterday unveiled its new official logo, which will be used from the 2016-17 season onwards. The division's lion icon has been the face of England's top flight since its launch in 1992 but has undergone a makeover to give it a fresh, modern look. It means, EPL is ending its 12-year association with Barclays bank and will from now on be known simply as ‘the Premier League’. The new logo – has a crowned lion’s head gazing to the right, accompanied by either the words ‘Premier League’ or ‘PL’ -- will replace the current logo of a lion with its left paw on a football. All 20 clubs in the top flight have also agreed a new centralised sponsorship strategy, meaning the league will no longer have a named sponsor. “From next season we will move away from title sponsorship and the competition will be known as the Premier League, a decision which provided the opportunity to consider how we wanted

Liverpool's Klopp host Jose's United

WHAT THE MANAGERS SAY Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp : "Apart from the table, it's a very important game. I know about the history, I like the special stories. The whole world will watch this game, it's a big honour to be part of it. "At the end, it's up to us to perform to our best. You cannot and should not ignore the special circumstance of a game like this. You have to be ready. "They have big quality and we have to respect this, as we do. But this is Anfield. We have to show this. We have had a few nice atmospheres but I'm open for the best atmosphere. We need everybody in a Liverpool shirt in this game." Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho on concerns over disrespectful chanting at the game: "In football we have some football tragedies, if you can say that, which is a big match that you lost, the mistake that some player did, this kind of thing, and you can make fun of it in a positive way. "But the human tragedy i

Ronaldo keeps on winning - Fifa Best Player Award

Cristiano Ronaldo was named the world's best player at the inaugural Best Fifa Football Awards in Zurich. Real Madrid and Portugal forward Ronaldo, 31, beat Barcelona's Lionel Messi and Atletico Madrid's Antoine Griezmann to the prize. Ronaldo also won the Ballon d'Or in December, with both honours recognition for success in the Champions League with Real and Euro 2016 with Portugal. 2016 was quite a year for Ronaldo. As well as scoring the decisive penalty in the shootout to win the Champions League, rescuing Real with a hat-trick in the final of the Club World Cup, captaining Portugal to Euro 2016 glory and being recognised with a fourth Ballon d'Or, he now has something Messi does not - the honour of being named best Fifa men's player. The former Manchester United forward had been the favourite for the award, following a year in which he continued to deliver. The stats don’t lie: 44 games, 42 goals, 14 assists.
