Champions but are they worthy?

The hottest debate after Manchester United made it 19 League Titles and became the most successful club in English Football History , is not plaudits for the teams achievements rather that "they cannot compare/compete with Sir Alex previous title winning sides".

The talk ranges from that they lacked the fantasy of the 2008 and 2009 squads they fall short of players like Cristiano Ronaldo and Carlos Tevez, also they miss the rock, the determination and drive Roy Keane instilled into the midfield of the 1999 squad, and then players like Cantona, Cole and York that had this aura around them that made defenders doubt their own ability, this United squad are said to have none of that (and they could be right) Lets not forget how dependant they are on Giggs and Scholes, lets be honest both living legends both way passed their hey days at the back end of their careers. And I can go on and on and on (Bruce, Robson, Hughes, McClair, Pallister & Ince to name but a few)

Well let me put my stamp on the squad 2010/2011 by looking at the stats Martin Tyler and his friends from Opta would help me here.
Season 93/94 (92 Points)
Manchester United went out and amassed 92 points that season scoring 80 goals along the way and conceding 38 in a lengthy 42 game season winning 27 drawing 11 and losing 4(losing at home and away to Chelsea ,and away at Blackburn and Wimbledon). Can you believe the first of Sir Alex 12 League Triumphs. They also won the FA Cup after beating Chelsea 4-0 in the Final, thereby becoming only the 4th team to achieve this feat in the 20th century (after Tottenham in 1961, Arsenal in 1971 and Liverpool in 1986).

Season 95/96 (89 Points)
A 38 game season Manchester United won the league by only 4 points ahead of Newcastle scored 73 goals conceded 35 in a season in which they lost 6 times and drew 7. Just for interest sake Manchester City were relegated that season and look at them now.

Season 96/97 (78 points)
Manchester United won the league on the penultimate day of the season with Liverpool and Newcastle both failing to keep up with the defending Champions. Won 22 drew 12 and lost 5 conceding a whopping 44 goals and scoring 76. If we remember it was this year Sir Alex took his team to the semi final of the European cup (losing 1-0 home and away to a Borussia Dortmund side that went on to win the trophy) and David Beckham got the PFA Young Player of the Year Award.

Season 98/99 (79 points)
Winning the Treble this year undoubtedly Manchester United and Sir Alex Ferguson's "Finest Hour". Going through the season losing just three times (Middleborough at home 3-2 and away to Arsenal 3-0 and Sheffield Wednesday 3-1). They scored 80 goals conceded 37 in winning 22 and drawing 13 times. And to think in the previous season 97/98 United went trophy less but I guess breaking the bank to purchase Jaap Stam, Dwight York and Jesper Blomqvist helped but even this United squad had to win on the final day against Spurs to seal the title champions.

Season 99/00 (91 points)
Like the previous season, Manchester United lost only three league games all season. Unlike in 98–99 season, they won by a comfortable margin – 18 points as opposed to a single point.
They won 28 and drew 7 'en route' to their sixth Premier League Title in eight seasons scoring 97 goals and conceding 45. This season United thought they'd signed Ruud Van Nistelrooy only for the striker suffered a training ground knee injury and subsequently failed to make the move to Manchester "just yet". And Quarter Final loss to Real Madrid still lives on in the memory of the Manchester faithful.

Season 00/01 (80 points)
Manager Sir Alex who was Knighted in June of 99 and made it three consecutive league titles, a first for manager of one club. Though I’m told Arsenal, Huddersfield and  Liverpool  had achieved that feat in the past - but with managerial changes in between. United scored 79 goals conceded 31 won 24 drew 8 and lost just 6 all season. Memorable moment this term well United Beating Arsenal 6-1 at Old Trafford 6 weeks before winning the league oh and they finally signed Ruud!

Season 02/03 (83 points)
Having trailed Arsene Wengers Arsenal by 8 points at the beginning of March no one would have thought they would've surrendered the title with 3 games remaining of the season. United went on to win 25 lose 5 and draw 8 times. Season most remembered for the signing of Rio Ferdinand from Leeds United in a deal worth £29.1 million, which would rise to an excess of £30 million, due to agent fees. It made him the most expensive defender in the world, as well as becoming Britain's most expensive player for the second time in two years. Not to forget a young Wayne Rooney (16) scoring his first Premier League goal for Everton indirectly assisting United by beating Arsenal that day.

Season 06/07 (89 points)
After Chelsea failed to win against Arsenal away it left them seven points behind United, with two games to go, confirming the Manchester club as champions once more. United won 28 lost 5 and drew 5 also scored 83 goals and conceded just 27. Famously Neil Warnock felt aggrieved that a under strength United lost at home to a Carlos Tevez West Ham United on the last day which meant his Sheffield United team was relegated.

Season 07/08 (87 points)
Manchester United won 27 drew 6 and lost 5 and their goal difference of +58 (GS 80- GA22) was the greatest ever attained in a Premier League season, beating the record set by Chelsea in 04/05' this year is remembered for Christiano Ronaldo equaling Alan Shearers 31 goals in one season, what makes it more special is well he did it as a midfielder an lets not forget Fernando Torres scoring 24 goals in this his debut season another record for a foreign player.Lets not forget that night in Moscow United earning their 3rd Champoins League crown against Chelsea

Season 08/09 (90 points)
Manchester United made three titles in consecutive years and more importantly equalling Liverpool's 18 League Titles, This year United won 28 drew 6 lost 4.  Ironically Liverpool ended the season second just 4 points behind United and only losing twice, but 11 draws turned out to be their Achilles heel.

Season 10/11 (80 points)
Besides the 93/94 season (which consisted of 42 games) this United squad stand up well against the other of SAF teams let’s not forget only two of these teams 07/08 and 98/99 have won the Champions League and this team have that opportunity this term. If we look at the goals scored this squad only scored 2 less goals than both previous two squads granted they conceded 15 more than the 08 (still a Premier League record) they only dropped 2 points at home all season in 07/08 they dropped 5 and in 9

What happens if Manchester United win the Europa League & finish in the top four?

Due to Champions League qualification clubs are now looking more favourably at the Europa League competition.  So Manchester United will naturally be gunning for glory as they take on Celta Vigo in their semi final.   If however, they win the tournament and finish the English Premier League in the top four, England will have just the four teams in Europe’s elite competition. What I find more interesting is if Manchester United win the Europa League and finish outside the top four! Should this scenario occur, England will have FIVE entrants to the Champions League, rather than four – with United joining the top four Premier League clubs.   There are a host of different scenarios as to who will be in Europe's second tier next season. For starters, the Premier League's fifth-placed club - should United not win the Europa League AND finish outside the top four - will go into the pot.   Then there's the EFL Cup - or League Cup - winners... however that ...

Liverpool's Klopp host Jose's United

WHAT THE MANAGERS SAY Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp : "Apart from the table, it's a very important game. I know about the history, I like the special stories. The whole world will watch this game, it's a big honour to be part of it. "At the end, it's up to us to perform to our best. You cannot and should not ignore the special circumstance of a game like this. You have to be ready. "They have big quality and we have to respect this, as we do. But this is Anfield. We have to show this. We have had a few nice atmospheres but I'm open for the best atmosphere. We need everybody in a Liverpool shirt in this game." Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho on concerns over disrespectful chanting at the game: "In football we have some football tragedies, if you can say that, which is a big match that you lost, the mistake that some player did, this kind of thing, and you can make fun of it in a positive way. "But the human tragedy i...

The Premier League changes its logo.

The most lucrative football league in the world, The English Premier League (EPL), yesterday unveiled its new official logo, which will be used from the 2016-17 season onwards. The division's lion icon has been the face of England's top flight since its launch in 1992 but has undergone a makeover to give it a fresh, modern look. It means, EPL is ending its 12-year association with Barclays bank and will from now on be known simply as ‘the Premier League’. The new logo – has a crowned lion’s head gazing to the right, accompanied by either the words ‘Premier League’ or ‘PL’ -- will replace the current logo of a lion with its left paw on a football. All 20 clubs in the top flight have also agreed a new centralised sponsorship strategy, meaning the league will no longer have a named sponsor. “From next season we will move away from title sponsorship and the competition will be known as the Premier League, a decision which provided the opportunity to consider how we wanted ...
