Choked

The enthusiasm of the Indian fans to get tickets for the much anticipated match vs. South Africa  is heart warming , unfortunately their country just or stadiums just cant handle the demand. My focus today though is solely       Eng vs. Sa Sun 6/3/2011.
Choking is the mechanical obstruction of the flow of air from the environment into the lungs. In cricket it’s mostly associated with the South African (Proteas). Having bundled England out on a deteriorating bowler friendly pitch for only 171, you would excuse me for believing a comfortable win would be inevitable since the Proteas bat well into their tail. That looked all the more  likely with a bright opening partnership between Amla (42)and Smith(22) of 63 and even after they both lost their and Kallis(15) wickets South Africa was still well placed at 124/3 after 32 overs. That’s requiring 48 from 108 balls (18 overs), and on that bowler friendly pitch they lost their last 7 wickets for 42 runs. What baffles me is the shot selection of their frontline batsman, can you explain to me how I repeat on a bowler friendly pitch both Kallis and Duminy playing expansive shots outside or just on off stump as if they required 10 runs an over. Surely just that little bit of pressure went like a rush of blood to the head and three runs an over can be scored with ones and twos easily. Yes it was difficult to bat on that surface and yes the spinners gave a good account of themselves not to mention Jimmy Anderson & Stuart Broads figures of  2/16  from 6 overs and 4/15 from 6.4 respectively but had South Africa shown more composure then they shouldn’t have given England a sniff and England could have been joining KP on the early flight home.
The Proteas batsmen weren’t solely to blame either I recall England being 15/3 in the fifth over and then Bopara and Trot scored 99 @3.93 in 25 overs, why didn’t Smith take a positive stance and continue with Peterson or even bowl him through rather than release the pressure and replace him.
Hey on the bright side on this occasion they choked in the group stages not in the semi- final and the Proteas are still in this World Cup 2011.

What happens if Manchester United win the Europa League & finish in the top four?

Due to Champions League qualification clubs are now looking more favourably at the Europa League competition.  So Manchester United will naturally be gunning for glory as they take on Celta Vigo in their semi final.   If however, they win the tournament and finish the English Premier League in the top four, England will have just the four teams in Europe’s elite competition. What I find more interesting is if Manchester United win the Europa League and finish outside the top four! Should this scenario occur, England will have FIVE entrants to the Champions League, rather than four – with United joining the top four Premier League clubs.   There are a host of different scenarios as to who will be in Europe's second tier next season. For starters, the Premier League's fifth-placed club - should United not win the Europa League AND finish outside the top four - will go into the pot.   Then there's the EFL Cup - or League Cup - winners... however that ...

The Premier League changes its logo.

The most lucrative football league in the world, The English Premier League (EPL), yesterday unveiled its new official logo, which will be used from the 2016-17 season onwards. The division's lion icon has been the face of England's top flight since its launch in 1992 but has undergone a makeover to give it a fresh, modern look. It means, EPL is ending its 12-year association with Barclays bank and will from now on be known simply as ‘the Premier League’. The new logo – has a crowned lion’s head gazing to the right, accompanied by either the words ‘Premier League’ or ‘PL’ -- will replace the current logo of a lion with its left paw on a football. All 20 clubs in the top flight have also agreed a new centralised sponsorship strategy, meaning the league will no longer have a named sponsor. “From next season we will move away from title sponsorship and the competition will be known as the Premier League, a decision which provided the opportunity to consider how we wanted ...

Arsene Wenger v Jose Mourinho: The history of their rivalry in quotes

A must read by Adams Bate of Skysports news, The war of words between Jose Mourinho and Arsene Wenger goes on and on. While the Manchester United boss has generally had the upper hand on the pitch over the years, both managers have had stern words for each other in the press room. Here we recall their rivalry in quotes, dating back to Mourinho's first season in English football... "I don't see especially that Chelsea play more English players than we do. Who have they produced, homegrown? Just one, John Terry." - Wenger in 2005 when quizzed on Arsenal's all-foreign line-up. At the beginning of the following season in August 2005, Wenger also expressed concerns over Chelsea's tactics: "I know we live in a world where we have only winners and losers, but once a sport encourages teams who refuse to take the initiative, the sport is in danger." Mourinho was unimpressed. "Wenger has a real problem with us and I think he is what you ca...
